Calcitriol is clinically used to treat osteoporosis and renal osteodystrophy caused by 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 deficiency. If hyperparathyroidism is induced and calcium ion concentration is corrected to normal, calcitriol should be taken at bedtime because taking it during the day increases calcium intake, which is more likely to cause hypercalcemia leading to vascular calcification.
