352. Oyster

Slightly sweet, quite pleasant to drink, basically no fishy taste.

Because the effects of seafood-related traditional medicines overlap, I won’t describe the sensations again but will directly state the effects. You can compare these with the previous medicines to find corresponding sensations. Arranged according to the strength of effects: resolves phlegm, calms the mind (specialized in consolidating the soul, prolonging sleep time), softens hardness and disperses nodules, pacifies liver and suppresses yang.

Seafood medicines (various shells) share a commonality: they can regulate the balance of qi and blood distribution throughout the body, playing a role in “eliminating wind.” Oyster is especially prominent in this. Raw oyster can relieve tidal fever, while calcined oyster has a stronger astringent and consolidating nature, useful for treating night sweats and seminal emissions.

353. Purple Seashell Tooth (Zi Bei Chi)

Also slightly sweet, even has a faint tea aroma, with a lingering sweetness.

Effects: pacifies liver and suppresses yang, nourishes the heart and calms the mind.

354. Substitute Hematite (Dai Zhe Shi)

Indeed has a stone-like taste. Breaking it down, it’s a bit bitter, astringent, with a pungent note that runs through, but not unpleasant.

After drinking, there is a clear cool airflow felt by both livers, gradually gathering along the midline, extending upward along the stomach and heart to the head and face.

Effects: soothes the liver and nourishes the blood, harmonizes the stomach and descends rebellious qi, nourishes the heart and calms the mind, moisturizes skin, promotes hair growth.

Modern research: ferric oxide can promote red blood cell regeneration and protect the gastric mucosa. From the perspective of pattern manifestations, nourishing the stomach equates to nourishing the face, and generating blood equates to growing hair.
