399. Sha Yuan Zi (Semen Euryales)

It really tastes great, sweet and refreshing, with a slight beany smell and a bit of throat dryness, but nothing serious.

After drinking, the energy gathers around the circle formed by the spleen, stomach, liver, and gallbladder—meaning, it truly feels like a ring drawn on the body, with energy concentrated between the upper and lower cross-sections of that ring. The spleen, stomach, liver, and gallbladder inside the ring receive full nourishment, especially the pancreas. Although the energy from the lower abdomen is drawn to the middle burner, because the lower abdomen’s qi is pulled upward, Sha Yuan Zi can still be considered to have a certain effect of stabilizing essence and reducing frequent urination.

Effects: Nourishes spleen and stomach, nourishes liver and benefits gallbladder, stabilizes essence and reduces frequent urination.

403. Hu Lu Ba (Fenugreek)

It is bitter with character, yet because its base is sweet, the overall taste is not unpleasant and is quite smooth.

After drinking, there’s a slight cold sensation in the body, likely indicating it is cold in nature; the effect of clearing turbidity seems more prominent than tonifying. The sinuses, eyes, nasopharynx on the face, as well as the back of the neck and thoracic and lumbar spine, are cleared as if “wind scatters clouds,” finally settling in the adrenal area. Initially, it feels cool without warmth; after about 15 minutes, a slight warm sensation slowly emerges, but this warmth seems more like “severe cold generating heat,” possibly the body’s natural rebound after the drug’s effect fades. Since Fenugreek clears much of the superficial heat from the upper body, the whole person feels more peaceful, so it also has a certain effect of stabilizing the kidneys and astringing essence.

Side effects: Slight discomfort from the temples to the back of the head, similar to feeling chilled by wind.

Effects: Clears heat and turbidity, stabilizes kidneys and astringes essence.

404. Jiu Cai Zi (Leek Seeds)

The brewed water is not unpleasant; the initial taste is sweet, and upon careful tasting, a faint leek flavor can be sensed. The aftertaste after swallowing is even more pronounced, very similar to the flavor left in the mouth after chewing leeks.

After drinking, energy immediately gathers in both kidneys and the lumbar region. On one hand, it surges up the Du meridian to the crown of the head, and on the other, it supplies energy to the lower abdomen, eventually reaching ineffable places.

I often think that the legend of leeks enhancing yang might originally have come from leek seeds. Leek seeds do indeed have some effect, and common people’s stories have led to the belief that leeks themselves also work.

Effects: Warms kidneys and strengthens waist, clears the Du meridian and promotes yang, warms the lower abdomen, helps yang, stabilizes essence.
