241. Torreya Seed
The shape resembles a pecan, the feel when cracking it is like a hickory nut. After soaking in water, chewing it tastes somewhat like an old popsicle, but it leaves a mouthful of powder. The soaked water tastes purely sweet on entry, with a aftertaste also somewhat like an old popsicle.
After drinking, the ears feel a bit itchy, gradually with slight swelling pain. Part of the energy gathers in the stomach, causing slight nausea. The qi is stuck between the diaphragm and intestines, neither rising nor descending, so it does not lead to actual vomiting. About 3 minutes later, a sputum is coughed out, leaving the throat feeling relieved.
Effects: Kills tapeworms and roundworms, moistens the throat and resolves phlegm (weak effect), moistens intestines and relieves constipation (weak effect).
243. Small Thistle (Xiao Ji)
The taste is somewhat similar to mulberry leaves but thicker, with more bitterness, saltiness, and sourness.
After drinking, the body quickly feels cool all over, especially on the back and lower abdomen.
Effects: Cools the blood, clears turbidity. Treats back abscesses and sores (internal and external use), hematuria caused by kidney and ureter inflammation.
244. Large Thistle (Da Ji)
The taste shares some similarities with small thistle, but only about 20% overlaps; the other 80% is bitter, astringent, and slightly nauseating.
After drinking, the cooling sensation is initially less than small thistle, but like the Gatling gun (from Red Alert 2: Yuri’s Revenge), it has a strong and lasting effect. Quickly, the gastrointestinal tract and front chest feel as if covered in air conditioning, even a sensation similar to applying floral water—the medicinal power is more concentrated. Although it gradually spreads throughout the body, the head and limbs only feel slight coolness.
Effects: Cools the blood, clears inflammation in the lungs, stomach, and intestines.
Note: Modern medicine’s gastritis and enteritis are not equivalent to gastrointestinal inflammation; specific microscopic manifestations must be considered (in Traditional Chinese Medicine terms, observing pulse patterns). Conditions showing whitening, edema, and exudate do not belong to the “inflammation” that requires clearing heat and cooling blood.
