245. Diyu (Sanguisorba officinalis)

The taste starts with bitterness, followed by astringency—very astringent, with a bit of sourness and a slight pungent, stimulating sensation.

Three seconds after drinking, the intestines start to move wildly, and after about 10 seconds, a fart was released. This medicine is relatively cold in nature; from the chest down to the feet, a cold sensation is felt, especially below the waist. The coldness permeates from inside out.

Effects: Cools the blood and detoxifies; treats intestinal inflammation. When fried with oil for external use, it treats exudative skin diseases and burns/scalds.

A certain master of traditional Chinese medicine once said at a drinking banquet that 15 grams of Diyu could treat gout. I quietly took note of it but have not tried it yet.

246. Huaihua (Sophora japonica flower)

Not sure if anyone has eaten Huaihua rice, which is purely sweet. When steeped too strong, it tastes somewhat bitter; after diluting it by half, it becomes much better.

After drinking, the stomach, both livers, the terminal colon, and rectum feel moistened.

Effects: Nourishes the liver, stomach, and intestines; treats perianal inflammation and various types of hemorrhoids. When decocted with other herbs, it is better to add it near the end. More suitable as a tea substitute.

246.1 Mihuijiao (Honey Sophora Pods)

After steeping, the seeds inside have a texture between broad beans and black beans, slightly bitter but quite tasty, containing more mucilage. The decoction tastes sweet with a hint of astringency and a tiny bit of bitterness.

After drinking, the back feels slightly numb and itchy; the lower abdomen feels a bit cool, with a slight urge to defecate.

Effects: Clears heat and cools the blood; moistens the intestines and relieves constipation.
