122.1 Jiushe Tuí (酒蛇蜕)
Chewing it directly has almost no taste, like chewing on a plastic food wrap.
Soaking it in water releases some fishy smell similar to Qishe (蕲蛇).
Confirmed effects: dispelling wind and unblocking the channels (for headaches, head swelling, stroke hemiplegia), calming wind and stopping tremors (for Parkinson’s disease, peripheral vascular signs).
Many folk remedies use snake slough or snake skin, with a similar frequency as toad skin, but snake skin often carries many parasites underneath (artificially farmed ones are safer), which is an unpleasant image.
In terms of taste, decocting in water is somewhat wasteful. It is like cicada slough or water buffalo horn (rhino horn), seemingly more suitable to be ground into powder and swallowed directly.
284. Lingxiao Flower (凌霄花)
Chewing it directly is bitter, but soaking it in water tastes sweet, with a slight minty coolness.
It is almost the preferred medicine for treating blood vessel blockage caused by deficiency of essence and blood (if the vessels do not nourish, they do not circulate), but if applied directly at the start, it can easily cause cold damage.
It is recommended to first replenish the patient’s essence and blood and expel cold dampness, then use 60g of Lingxiao Flower intensively to attack the lesion (mainly benign and malignant tumors of the uterus, liver, and intestines).
Another effect is cooling blood and detoxification, which can be used to finish treatment of skin diseases such as acne and eczema.
332.1 Ginkgo Leaf
My relative’s yard has a ginkgo tree, and since childhood, I have found it quite fragrant. Dried ginkgo leaves also have a fresh fragrance when smelled directly.
Chewing it initially is also quite fragrant; however, as you keep chewing, a sour and astringent sensation appears. When soaked in water, sourness dominates, with a bitter aftertaste. Only at the final licking does one perceive a slight grassy aroma.
It restrains Qi entering the lungs and restrains blood returning to the heart, with some effect of clearing turbidity, but if you want to resolve blood stasis, it may need to be combined with other traditional Chinese medicines.
