In 2021, with the realization of faster-than-light travel technology, humanity gained convenient and unrestricted mobility across the Solar System. However, due to a design flaw in this technology, the Moon exploded, scattering countless lunar fragments toward Earth—triggering an unprecedented global catastrophe. The surviving humans fled Earth and began establishing new homes across the Solar System. As a result of this disaster, national governments and other authoritative institutions became highly unstable, and public security deteriorated into a major challenge. To compensate for severe shortages in law enforcement personnel, certain organizations began authorizing individuals to apprehend wanted criminals in exchange for bounties—thus giving rise to the profession of “bounty hunters.”
Spike and Jet are bounty hunters who pilot the spaceship Bebop, chasing fugitives across the cosmos to collect rewards. During their interstellar travels, they meet Faye—a beautiful but deeply indebted woman obsessed with money—and Ed—a child prodigy hacker. They also adopt Ein, an exceptionally intelligent data dog. From then on, the four humans and one dog wander the vast expanse of space, navigating joy and sorrow in their own lives and those of others, while each searches for answers about their past.
