In rural areas, the stench stings your eyes, mosquitoes swarm everywhere, and the walls are covered with all kinds of curses; in the city, women’s restrooms always have long lines, and men’s restrooms are crowded with smokers. The toilet seats are never free of footprints, the sinks have sensor dispensers like blind box toys, and don’t even mention those who rush in and out without flushing.
How should restrooms be improved? How should public restrooms funded by taxpayers be improved?
Wuzhou is the director of the Ecological Design and Technology R&D Center at the Wuxi Applied Technology Research Institute of Tsinghua University.
For more than ten years, Wuzhou and his team have reviewed a large amount of literature on restroom design and also investigated public restrooms of all sizes across the country.
In addition to using new materials and technologies, they also use counters to track the ratio of men to women using the restrooms. When renovating over a thousand restrooms in Beijing’s hutongs, they thoughtfully considered residents’ needs to dispose of and clean urinals.
